(this is going to be a long post!)

Admittedly, I haven’t been posting again. The problem being?

I’m not really sure how I’m supposed to blog.

When I started this blog, I had in mind exactly how I wanted portray myself. I wanted to be the kind of girl who was confident, mature, and enthusiastic about everything that life has to offer. That meant that every post would sound like I’m having great fun. Emo posts are so out. Sounds good, huh?

But when I started posting, I realize I don’t always feel like life’s one heck of an awesome journey. Sometimes I’m on a high, and everything seems possible; when I’m on a low, getting out of bed is difficult.  I considered writing about the challenges I face, but my pride got into the way. I’m the sort who doesn’t like to admit that my life’s not perfect. Like for example, when Mum and I have our long  conversations, I tend to get extremely defensive when she starts to discuss my faults. (I’m trying to improve on that!:) )

That meant feeling very frustrated over the fact that whenever I was feeling down, I still had to write as if I was having a great time. The worst part was it felt as if I was telling you a bunch of lies.

Then last week, I went to Batam (Indonesia) on a short but rather enjoyable holiday. On the first night, I had some issues on my mind, so I went to the Reception Desk to ask for a piece of paper and a pen. I spent 10 minutes writing out all my thoughts. When I reread what I had written, I asked myself, why can’t I blog in the same fashion too? What I had written was straightforward, with no pretense and well, it described exactly how I had felt at that moment.

So I’ve decided to do a revamp of my blog. Rather than just show you one side of me, I want to be like a Julie Powell(I loved the movie!), writing about everything on my blog. So yep!

Anyway, on to the food part! Today’s recipe will be Sugar Cookies. I made these with two of my good friends a while ago. What I love about making these is decorating them. Truthfully, I’m a dang lousy decorator. Blame it on the lack of creative genes:/ Where as my friends C- and S- are a different breed altogether.

C-'s work.

I made them with C- and one week later, I made them with S-. S- and I actually planned to make rainbow cookies, but then we kinda failed :/ As you can see from above(first picture), the different coloured icings ran into each other, creating the kind of rainbow that you see in oil slicks.

Classic Sugar Cookies

The Cookies Bible

For the cookies,

1 cup CRISCO Butter flavour all vegetable shortening
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp milk
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
cookie cutters and decorati0ns

  1. Combine 1 cup shortening, granulated sugar and brown sugar in a large bowl. Beat with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, beating them in one at a time. Add vanilla.
  2. Combine flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Add to shortening mixture in three batches, beating well after each addition. Divide mixture in to three parts, shape them into a disk and wrap each in cling wrap. Chill them for an hour. (they can also be frozen.  for about 3 months i guess?)
  3. Preheat oven to 350F/170C
  4. Roll out one of the three disks until about 1/4 inch thickness( Don’t roll them too thin. If you do, it makes it VERY difficult to transfer them to the baking sheet). Cut out desired shapes and place them on a piece of parchment paper. Bake for about 5-6 minutes, or until cookie edges are slightly golden brown. Cool completely before decorating.

For the icing,

4 cups icing sugar, sifted
4 tbsp milk
food colourings ( i used red, blue, yellow and got the other colours by mixing)

  1. Gradually add milk to the icing sugar. Mix until the mixture can flow and is easy to spread and work with.
  2. Using toothpicks, dip them into the colourings and use the toothpicks to mix the colour into the icing.

Yesterday, I wrote out an extremely long post about my trip to the Fort Canning Park. Sadly, I assumed WordPress autosaved it for me, but alas, it was not so.

man's gold and nature's gold

Dirt lines.

I enjoyed walking though Fort Canning Park (FCP). Even though Singapore’s touted as the “Garden City”, and has much greenery almost every where one goes, it is difficult to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and truly immerse one in nature. Unlike the Botanic Gardens, FCP is much quieter and gives one a sense of serenity, which is hard to find in our fast paced lives. I spent 3 hours there, walking, appreciating and snapping away. Okay, so my post title says it all.

Pure fun for two whole months. WHOOOOOO!

Anyway, this is going to be my first recipe post. Pathetic, yes, I know. (by the way, it’s one a.m. in the morning here, and I just baked these 5seconds ago. So you can more or less tell how i’m really going to live life crazy these few months :D )

Sooo, let me tell you about today.

It  didn’t start off very promising as it was pouring really heavily in the morning.IMG_3092The mood in the canteen, where everyone was assembling to take the Chemistry paper, was of restlessness, excitement and anticipation. It was the last paper for most students, so although everyone had their textbooks on the table, not many were actually reading it.

FAZZI!

After the paper, which ended at 9, the whole hall broke into cheers and applause. After four years of working so hard for this examination, it was finally over! Read the rest of this entry »

The last time I went shopping was a really, really long time ago. I can’t even remember when I last bought something (other than groceries, that is). So after lunch with D- this afternoon, I went to Kitchen Capers, which is literally just outside my school. Convenient, huh? ;)

Anyway, I love Kitchen Capers. Unlike Phoon Huat (another store that sells baking goods), Kitchen Capers sells things that are more for fun than for practicality. I went there once before and bought the prettiest muffin pan liners :D

So when I stepped into the store, I think I was feeling a little deprived, so I bought a few things that made me go ” OH MY GOODNESS, I LOVE THIS!”, but probably wouldn’t use very often. Yikes. So let me show you the things put a smile on my face (and a hole in my pocket) today.

Edible ink. Great for decorating cookies!I've been wanting this for ages.Lookie! :D

*sweeps dust off blog*

Hi there. Missed me?

Okay, so I haven’t been blogging for nearly a month now. Blame the crazy O level examinations. It’s going to be over in a week’s time(!!!!). Gosh. I really can’t wait for freedom to come on the 13th of November! Finally, I will have enough time to bake, to photograph and to enjoy teenage-hood.

Yay!:D

Although this is supposed to be a food blog, the food part of the blog hasn’t been really obvious. :/ ah, my bad. It’s not going to stay that way though, because I’m…

FINALLY A MEMBER OF THE DARING KITCHEN!

Actually, I joined in July, but I didn’t have enough time to participate in the challenges. But that’s in the past, and I’m super excited to be able to participate in the November challenge! WHOOHOO.

Anyway, I do have some pictures from random events. Thank goodness I have an outlet to release my pent up frustration. If not, I’d probably be stuck in the mental hospital right now. And no, I am seriously not kidding about how stressful preparing&sitting for the O’levels are.
